Chocolate

Bruges isn’t just one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Europe; it’s also a dream destination for chocolate lovers. As you wander through the cobbled streets and scenic canals, you’ll notice an irresistible aroma wafting from the many artisanal chocolate shops that dot the city.

Guests at De Drie Koningen often ask us the same delicious question: “Where should we buy chocolate in Bruges?” Since Bruges is famous for its chocolate, it’s no surprise that the city offers plenty of choices. However, knowing where to go makes all the difference.

To start, there are two types of chocolate shops in Bruges:

  • Chocolateries
  • Chocolate shops

Chocolateries

A chocolaterie makes its chocolates on-site, right here in Bruges. These shops focus on craftsmanship and use high-quality ingredients. The pralines are handmade, often in small batches, which means they’re incredibly fresh. If you’re after authentic Belgian chocolate made in Bruges, this is the place to go.

We highly recommend Sukerbuyc, a family-run chocolaterie located just a short walk from the city center. They make all their chocolates in-house and have built a reputation for quality and tradition.

Chocolate shops

On the other hand, chocolate shops sell products that are usually made elsewhere. While these chocolates are still tasty, they aren’t produced in Bruges and often come from larger commercial brands. You’ll find many of these shops in the city, but they don’t offer the same local experience.

Chocolate museum

Choco-Story

Just a 250-meter walk from De Drie Koningen, you’ll find one of Bruges’ most delightful attractions: Choco-Story, the Chocolate Museum. This interactive museum offers a deep dive into the world of chocolate—perfect for anyone curious about the history, science, and secrets behind Belgium’s most iconic treat.

At Choco-Story, you’ll learn how chocolate evolved from an ancient Mayan drink into the creamy pralines we love today. The museum showcases everything from cocoa bean cultivation to modern-day chocolate-making techniques. Along the way, you’ll also get to watch live demonstrations and—of course—taste real Belgian chocolate.

This is a fun and educational outing for both adults and kids. Whether you’re a casual chocolate lover or a serious chocoholic, Choco-Story adds extra flavour to your Bruges visit.
