A historic residence with deep roots

The story of Sint-Clarastraat 18 dates back to the early 19th century when it was listed under the Austrian house number E17/26. Its first recorded owner was Rupertus (Robert) Houvenaeghel, a commissioner of the Berg van Barmhartigheid (Mount of Mercy) in Bruges, a charitable institution. His stewardship reflected the property’s connection to the civic and social life of the city.

By the mid-19th century, Rupertus’ son Karel Houvenaeghel became the owner, further tying the property to a legacy of family and continuity. Karel’s widow, Rosalia Baey, later inherited the house, maintaining its role as a vital part of Bruges’ dynamic urban fabric.

In 1888, ownership passed to Mathilde Baey, widow of Desideer Timmery, and in 1898, to Victoor Leenaerdt. After World War I, the house was divided among Leenaerdt’s children, symbolizing its enduring connection to family life.

A hub of trade and craftsmanship

Sint-Clarastraat 18 was not just a home—it was a place of commerce and craft. Records from 1827 show that Bernard Roose, a trader who sold clogs at the bustling Bruges market, lived here alongside Bruno Roose, a shopkeeper. This tradition of entrepreneurship continued into the 1830s when Frans Maertens, another shopkeeper, called the house home.

In 1866, Philippe Naeyaert, a skilled shoemaker, resided here, followed in 1867 by Emile Rivière, a painter. Each of these residents added a layer of history to the house, reflecting the industrious spirit of Bruges.

A modern stay with historical character

Today, Sint-Clarastraat 18 stands as a testament to the craftsmanship, enterprise, and family life that defined Bruges through the centuries. Lovingly preserved and thoughtfully updated, the property offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern comforts.

In 2024, the house received a significant update through the efforts of De Drie Koningen vacation rentals, ensuring that its historic character remains intact while meeting the expectations of today’s discerning guests.
